In case you haven't noticed, the weather over the past few days has been H-O-T-T HOT! IWFC classes and club sessions are still on as usual but extra water and rest breaks are on the menu for everyone. In addition, be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day as well as in the evening after you get home from fencing. Last night's fencers did a great job!
The good news is, next week's weather is supposed to be a LOT cooler so hang in there! And remember, you can always get in two hours of air-conditioned fencing on Sunday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Poquoson Primary School with the PFC fencers. (In fact, if you're not fencing, bring a jacket -- it's been chilly the past couple of weekends!)
Schedule reminders: No PFC Sunday, July 4, and no IWFC club or classes Monday, July 5.
The July equipment order will be sent in the night of Wednesday, July 5. Order info and payment can be given to me at any class or club session or handled online. Absolute is the preferred vendor but if you see something you like elsewhere, let me know and I'll see if I can set it up so you don't have to pay shipping there, either.

Classes, camps, and congratulations! - 21 Jun 10
The next IWFC beginner class starts tonight! If you haven't registered yet, you still have time. Just email coach@iwfc.net and you're good to go. (Okay, you can just show up tonight, too. It's all good!)
Also, Poquoson's next beginner and intermediate classes start July 11. Click here for the registration form.
All classes are open to adults as well as youngsters!
Got a youngster who's not quite sure about taking a class yet? How about a five day fencing camp instead? Camps are two hours per day, starting with 'Which end is the pointy end?' on Monday and ending with campers fencing against each other as family and friends cheer them on in Friday's session. The Poquoson camps are held at the Parks and Rec building and the Isle of Wight camps are held in the aerobics room at Nike Park. Camps are held for two age groups, 8-10, and 11-14. All equipment is provided and campers get their very own fencing gloves!
We've had some busy fencers the past couple of weekends:
* Rhiannon made a strong showing at the Summer Sizzler in Charlottesville the weekend before last. She came out second in her pool, which gave her a bye in the first DE round. Her day ended in the second round but she finished solidly!
* Last weekend saw Scott and new-to-IWFC fencer José in Richmond at the Tune-Up Open. Among Saturday's competitors was two-time national champion Ariel DeSmet and Scott not only got to fence him in the pools, he was the only fencer to score more than one touch on him! José also came out of pools in good shape and won his first DE before being narrowly edged out by Marcus in the second round. Scott then defeated Marcus before facing Ariel again, this time in the final four. It was another grand showing but Ariel moved on, taking first, and Scott finished tied for third. José also had a strong finish, ending in the center of the pack against some of the top foilists in the Division.
* José returned to Richmond Sunday for the Y14 foil. He came out of the pool in first and finished the day in that position as well. Congratulations!
For upcoming tournament opportunities, keep an eye on the VA Division schedule. The fall tournaments will start hitting the calendar soon!

Congratulations and reminders - 8 Jun 10
Congratulations to Scott for earning his C10 in saber at last weekend's Division Championships in Charlottesville! In addition to taking second in mixed saber, he also came in 7th in men's epee and 5th in men's foil.
These results keep Scott well on track to winning another Jefferson Cup, the Virginia Division's award to fencers with the highest number of points in certain categories. The category he's leading is the men'sTri-Wizard Cup three weapon cup and with the season winding down, the other guys in the Division are going to have to hustle to take it away from him! You can see the current point standings on the Division website.
Registration's open for camps and classes at both IWFC and PFC! The next IWFC beginner class starts June 21 and you just need to send an email to coach@iwfc.net to sign up. The next PFC beginner and intermediate classes start July 11. Registration for those classes is handled through Poquoson Parks and Rec. Ditto for the fencing camps Poquoson is also hosting in July and August. Going to be on vacation during part of a scheduled class? Just let me know and we'll work something out!
Remember, no PFC next Sunday, June 13. See you on the 20th! (If I don't see you at IWFC before then!)
Starting tonight, IWFC fencers should avoid parking to the left of the posts in front of the building (i.e. the ones to the left of my car). The guy next door is going to start getting nighttime deliveries and since they're going to be big, heavy parts at times, we'll want to stay clear of the doors. (You can park all the way across on the highway side of the lot, this is just for the building side.)
The equipment order is in so you can pick up your stuff at any practice.
And last but certainly not least, a BIG WOO HOO goes to all of our graduates! Way to go!

Schedule changes, order reminder - 2 Jun 10
Equipment orders are due tonight! The new stuff should be here by Tuesday morning and can be picked up at any Level A or open fencing session.
No IWFC beginner class tonight! Class will start back up Friday evening. This puts the last day of the beginner class on June 16.
This, of course, means the next IWFC beginner class start date needs to be bumped. So now the next IWFC class will start on Monday, June 21, instead of the original June 14 date. Fees and such are as usual (see here for details).
Poquoson's next beginner class starts July 11. Although they only have it on their youth athletics page, adults are more than welcome as well. As always, registration for this class is handled through Poquoson Parks and Rec.
Poquoson Parks and Rec will also be offering two fencing camps this summer, one in July and one in August.
Also, Isle of Wight Parks and Rec will be offering a fencing camp in August. Registration isn't open yet but as soon as I see it on their website, I'll let you know!
