October already?? - 29 Sep 2010

October classes at IWFC/PFC: Poquoson's next set of classes begins Sunday, October 3. Sign-up is through Poquoson Parks and Rec, not me! So if you haven't contacted them yet, be sure to do so sooner rather than later. And IWFC's next set of classes start October 4 (beginner) and October 5 (intermediate). Registration for these does go through me so shoot an email to coach@iwfc.net and you're good to go. Fees, days, times, etc. are on the info page. If you have any questions, just let me know!

Equipment order: I'm bumping this month's equipment order up one day to Tuesday, October 5, so our Poquoson fencers can (hopefully) get their new equipment on the 10th. As always, orders and payment are due to me no later than 10 p.m. and can be either turned in at a club/class session or emailed. If you're thinking about entering the Ultimate E and Under foil tournament in Hampton on October 16, this is your last chance to order something through the club and save yourself the shipping fee!

October 16 tournament: Speaking of the Ultimate E and Under, if you're planning on competing, don't forget to preregister. Yes, you can sign up at the door that morning but it will cost an extra $5. Not sure if you should enter or not? Ask! We'll talk about it!

Get your cans to fencing! Your aluminum cans, that is. I know I'm not the only one who drinks too much soda but now you can use that little habit to help the club. Bring your cans to IWFC/PFC practices or classes and that's it! (Already crushed would be great, especially for PFC, but you can also use the wall-mounted crusher at IWFC.) Whenever the bin's full, I'll trade the cans for a bit of cash at a nearby recycler, getting a little extra income for us. Oh yeah, and it helps the environment too. (Minor detail, that!)

Congrats and a couple of how-tos - 22 Sep 2010

Scott got his fencing season off to a great start at the Kickoff Open last weekend! Out of nearly 100 foilists, he finished 14th and in epee, he came within an ace of getting his A, finishing 11th out of over ninety. But hey, renewing a B at the first event of the season isn't anything to sneeze at! Way to go, Scott! (Full results are here.)

Want to preregister for the Ultimate E and Under but aren't sure how? It's easy! Just click here to go to the tournament's preregistration page. Then enter your last name in the box that says, well, 'Enter Your Last Name.' It will either reply, 'Sorry, No Fencers Found' or give you a 'Choose yourself' pull-down list if it finds names similar to yours. Either way, if you're not already in the system (and you won't be if this is your first time preregistering for a tournament), click on the 'Create a New Fencer Record' option. Follow the instructions to fill in your information on the next screen and that's pretty much it! (At the bottom of the screen, you'll have the option to create an account on AskFRED. Doing so makes future preregistrations even easier but not doing so won't cause any problems either.)

I've also been asked about checking or changing your club affiliation on your USFA membership. To check your affiliation, log into your USFA account and your club will be listed top and center on the screen. If no club is listed or the club is incorrect, you can't change it yourself. But send an email to Dana Brown at the National Office asking her to update your information for you and you're good to go!

Tournament registration's open! - 14 Sep 2010

Registration is open for the Ultimate E and Under mixed foil tournament! This is the tournament IWFC/PFC is hosting on Saturday, October 16, at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Any fencer born in 1997 or earlier is eligible as long as they don't have a fencing rating higher than an E. (If you don't know what that means, it's pretty safe to assume you or your fencer is unrated.)

Details about the tournament are here. The entry fee is $25 if you pre-register, $30 if you just show up that day. Click here to pre-register; payment is due when you check in on the 16th.

What equipment do you need? In addition to your mask, glove, and jacket, you must also have a plastron (underarm protector), knickers, a lamé, two body cords, and two electric foils. The next equipment order will be done on Wednesday, October 6, and items should be in hand by the following Tuesday so you have plenty of time to decide about ordering stuff for the tourney.

This should be a great tournament to go to, whether you go as a competitor or a spectator! It's just a couple of blocks away from the Peninsula Town Center (formerly known as the Coliseum Mall) so it's pretty easy for just about everyone to get to! Take a few minutes to read How to Go to a Fencing Tournament

Note: I still need volunteers to help with the tournament. Don't worry about not knowing what to do, it's actually pretty easy. If you can help either that day or the night before (Friday, the 15th, when we'll tape out the strips on the floor), please let me know.

Poquoson registration is open! - 13 Sep 2010

Poquoson Parks and Rec is now accepting registrations for the fall beginner and intermediate fencing classes! Click here for class details then go here for registration info. The class is open to anyone aged ten and up so spread the word and get a friend to sign up with you!

Don't forget to turn in a new release/med info form. You can either click on the link to print a form (two-sided printing, please!) or pick up a blank one at club.

Congratulations and good luck to all of our fencers heading off to college for the first time this year! Be sure to come play with us when you're home on break!

And of course, if you're a fencer who is now in the area because of college, come out for a visit some time. The first one's free, after all!

05 September 2010

Labor Day and later - Sep 5 2010

Official holiday reminder: No fencing until Tuesday due to the holiday! (Great time to wash the gear, just saying.)

Registration's still open for the next beginner and intermediate classes at IWFC. Email coach@iwfc.net or call 238-3111 to register. The beginner class starts Wednesday, September 8, and the intermediate class starts Tuesday, September 7. The fee for each class is $60 plus equipment and the intermediate fee includes dues for the month. If you've taken the beginner class and have been practicing your new skills at Level A, you're ready for this intermediate class!

It's a new month so September fees are due -- and don't forget about equipment rental payments! If you have club equipment, payment is due whether you've been fencing or not. As always, you can pay in person or online.

Now available, monthly statements! If you'd like to receive a statement by email each month, let me know to what address yours should be sent. (Paper statements are not available.)

We still need a few more USA Fencing members so I can renew the club's membership. If you're planning on joining or renewing this season (click here), please let me know ASAP so I can get this sent in. List IWFC as your primary club, even if you're mainly a PFC fencer.

The old logo is back! If you weren't a fan of the new logo, you weren't alone. USA Fencing listened and brought the old logo back this week. And they're conducting a survey to get input on three variations of it. So take a moment, look over the three, and let them know which one you like best.

Because we're in a new fencing year, it's time for new release/medical info forms. I ask for new forms once a year to ensure the information on file is as accurate as possible. You can either get a new form from me at any IWFC/PFC session or you can click here to download it. (If you download it, pleasepleasepleasePLEASE print it on one page, front and back, not two separate pages!) Turn in the completed form at any IWFC/PFC session and you're set for another year.
