Beginner fencing class: The next IWFC beginner class will start Monday, March 15, and run ten classes, meeting Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 at the salle. The class fee is $60 and equipment can be either purchased for $110-130 or rented for $30 per month. Send your registration info to coach@iwfc.net by Sunday, March 14. Please include the name and age of the fencer(s) and whether equipment will be purchased or rented. Minimum age for students is 10, maximum age is 971. (Rental equipment is available on a first come, first served basis and as such, availability isn't guaranteed.)
Level A fencing: Starting in March, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at IWFC from 6:00 to 7:00 will be practices for our 'Level A' fencers. Level A fencers are those who have had at least the beginner class (or equivalent experience elsewhere) but want more time to practice with fencers their level before they tackle the open fencing sessions. We'll work on the skills you've learned so far with both drills and bouting against other Level As. If you're interested in these sessions but aren't sure if they're for you or not, just ask. The cost is $10 per month.
Intermediate class: The next IWFC intermediate class will be announced soon. If you're interested in taking this class, please let me know as I have some scheduling thoughts in mind but would like to bounce them off of you before I get too set on anything.
PFC club sessions - two hours! Yep, PFC is going to continue having open fencing from 6:00 to 8:00. During the intermediate class time, from 6:00 to 7:00, club fencers will have use of half of the floor while the other half is used by the class. Then from 7:00 to 8:00, the entire floor is available as usual. See you there!
Spring Break fencing camps: IWFC will be hosting youth fencing camps during Spring Break, April 5 to 9. Camps are two hours each day, Monday through Friday, with separate camps for ages 8-10 and 11-14. The first four days will be spent learning the basics and on Friday we'll have a mini round-robin to show off for friends and family! The 8-10 camp will be mornings from 10:00 until noon and the 11-14 camp will be from 1:00 until 3:00. The fee is $75 and all equipment will be provided. Both camps are limited to eight participants but if there's enough interest, second sessions for one or both age groups may be added. Email coach@iwfc.net to register.
Equipment order: Monday, March 1, is the next equipment order. Orders can be turned in either at club Sunday or Monday or sent in via email. (Email should be sent no later than 10 p.m. Monday night to ensure its arrival before the order is sent in.) As always, the preferred vendor is Absolute Fencing but if there's something you want from someone else, let me know.

Let's try this again - 14 Feb 2010
Looks like everything's cooperating today so Poquoson fencing is back on track!
Beginning fencers: Today's class is two hours, from 4:00 to 6:00, to give us plenty of time to get measurements for equipment and all that good stuff. After today, classes are from 5:00 to 6:00.
Intermediate fencers: All classes, including today's, are from 6:00 to 7:00. Show up a little early as you're responsible for doing your own stretching and warming up now!
Club fencers: Of course, all of this means that club's back to one hour, from 7:00 to 8:00 for the next eight sessions. And I'm hoping to bring an electric strip (and weapons) with me every other week or so - more fun!
General fencing info:
Equipment order: Since last week's class start was delayed, I'm doing an equipment order for the new class this Monday. So if you need or want New Stuff, whether for club or for upcoming tournaments, let me know no later than Monday evening. Equipment should be here by Thursday night's IWFC session.
Speaking of tournaments, there's a BIGGIE coming up in April! Virginia Beach will be host to a North American Cup event featuring some of the top-rated fencers in the nation -- including past and future Olympians! This particular NAC will also feature youth fencing, specifically events for ten-, twelve-, and fourteen-and-under fencers. It will be held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center April 23 - 26. Additional details are here on US Fencing's website.
And in general 'looking good'-ness, video from Richmond's River City Rumble has been posted to our YouTube page. Plus more pictures, including some new Halloween pics, have been added to IWFC's photos page.

Sunday is a Snow Go - 7 Feb 10
Sunday update: Just heard from Poquoson Parks and Rec -- all Sunday activities, including fencing, have been cancelled. So we'll start the classes next Sunday instead.
IWFC: I don't anticipate any issues tomorrow (Monday) night so right now we're still on for the usual 7:00 to 9:00 practice. Of course, if things change I'll let you know!

Annnnnd we're back! - 1 Feb 10
IWFC is on as usual tonight. I've just come back from a trip to the salle (among other places) and confirmed everything's groovy so I'll see you all there tonight! (Homework shouldn't be a problem, riiiiight?) Of course, while the roads are pretty clear, they are wet in places and being the clever people we are, we all know this means there's a potential for ice as the temperatures drop again. Be smart, kids!
Caveat: Okay, almost everything is groovy. The parking lot is still snowed/slushed over, including the turnoff from the highway, so give it an extra slowdown before you start the turn and keep it slow across the lot, please. Arriving in different shoes than the ones you plan to fence in would be appreciated as well. It'll help keep our strips clean and dry!
Speaking of the parking lot -- and this goes for every night, not just tonight -- please save the, er, enthusiastic acceleration for somewhere else. Every time you gun it, whether you're pulling away from the building or pulling out onto the highway, you're tearing up the lot. And since it's not in great shape to start with, every little bit of damage adds up quickly. If you have to floor it to get onto the highway ahead of traffic, just wait a few seconds for the next clear spot instead. Honest, you'll survive! And it'll help what little gravel there is last a bit longer between draggings. Thanks!
Last day! According to the Poquoson Parks and Rec website, today's the last day to register for the next set of fencing classes! If you haven't contacted them yet, please do so ASAP.
Equipment orders are due tonight so don't forget to bring your order to club or to email me no later than 10 p.m. Payment can be made either in person or online via the 'Make a Payment' button on the left. Ordered equipment should be in hand Thursday night.
Chocolates ahead! Kristin, chocolate goddess of Cocoa Nouveau, will be at Let's Talk Wine in Chesapeake on February 6 from 11:00 to 5:00 and at the Coast Guard Exchange in Greenbrier on February 13 from noon until 6:00 p.m. At both events, she'll have plenty of samples so you can build your own assortments. Additionally, she'll be delivering boxed assortments at INTEGRATIVE Manual Therapy and Wellness in Norfolk on February 8. Enjoy!
Look out for flying cows! Val has opened a shop on Etsy to make it even easier to buy her clever felted work. You can see more of her art, both felted and in other mediums, at Flying Cow Creations. And you can even visit her studio in person at the Smithfield Arts Center, 319 Main Street! That adorable flying cow hanging in the window in my office? That's one of Val's whimsies!
