Want to fence in public? With a should-be-big audience? The Regal Harbour View Grande movie theatre in north Suffolk has invited us to be part of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader's opening night on Friday, December 10. We would be fencing from 7:00 to 8:00 and you know there should be a lot of people at the theatre that night!
Of course the down side is that there are two classes that night. If there are enough people interested in doing the theatre demo and if the beginner and saber students are willing to work something out with me so I can cover that night's information at some other place/time (including individual lessons if need be), I'll let the theatre know we're in. But I need to hear back from people by Wednesday night if at all possible since I owe the theatre our answer Thursday morning. So if you're interested and available that night, let me know! And beginning/saber students, let me know if rescheduling that night's sessions is all right by you or not.

Allll sorts of stuff! - 27 Nov 2010
Schedule reminder: Fencing's on holiday until Monday, November 29. See you then!
Need something to tide you over in the meanwhile? How about:
Pre-registration is open for the Hangover, which will be January 8-9 in Richmond. This is traditionally a large open event and tends to have a solid array of fencing abilities from 'just started this fall' to some of the top fencers in the Mid-Atlantic. It also has women's events in all three weapons - bonus! This year all events are in the same venue, Richmond Volleyball Club's Westmoreland location (directions are on the above website). Registration is $35 per weapon in advance, $50 at the door so be sure to pre-reg, even if you only think you might enter!
Need/want fencing equipment for the Hangover? Maybe do a little holiday shopping for yourself or your fencaholic? The next equipment order goes in on Wednesday, December 1. Start putting your shopping list together now! Orders and payments are due to me by 10 p.m. that night. (As always, Absolute is the preferred vendor.)
The club t-shirt order should be arriving on Tuesday, November 30. And there are some extra goodies, from keychains and water bottles for both clubs to maroon PFC tees! I'll try to post pics as soon as they come in but rest assured, I'll have the real thing with me at all practices and classes, too. Socks are expected to ship on December 14 (they're from a different vendor); I'll let you know when they're here.
Thanks go out to everyone who has been bringing in aluminum cans. The bin's nearly ready for its first trip to the recycler!
Need something to tide you over in the meanwhile? How about:
- Videos from the Fencing Masters Tournament (By 'CyrusofChaos' so they're good!)
- The Fencing Masters Tournament from an audience member's perspective.
- The FIE has just uploaded a pile of videos from September's zonal championships in Tunisia. Hopefully vids of the recently-completed Worlds will be up soon.
- How about some more videos of IWFC fencers? Visit our YouTube channel for clips of the Halloween Open!
- There are also some new photos on the IWFC site. Have some of your own you'd like to share? Send 'em in!
- USA Today just ran an article about Notre Dame fencer Ted Hodges, who recently underwent a heart transplant. It's well worth the read.

Thursdays are back to the normal schedule! - 18 Nov 2010
The schedule conflict that had caused me to have to bump Level A off of Thursday nights for a few weeks is no longer an issue. So Level A is still on from 6:00 to 7:00 tonight as originally scheduled! But I'm also going to keep Tuesday Level A practices two hours long through the end of the year since the next intermediate class won't be until January.

Fencing pictures, new swag, and class registration - 12 Nov 2010
As of two minutes ago, none of our fencers are signed up for this weekend's tourney in Richmond. So right now my weekend plans do not include going to Richmond. If you're planning on competing but haven't preregistered yet, let me know via email or I won't be there.
Boston.com has some great pictures from the World Championships!
Don't forget to let me know your sock and t-shirt order by Monday evening. Payment is not due until you pick up your new stuff. Get a little bit of your holiday shopping out of the way the easy way!
Speaking of easy holiday shopping, equipment orders are going in twice a month until the end of the year. The next round of orders are due to me by 10 p.m. Monday night. Need help with some ideas for your fencer? Let me know and we'll put our heads together! Or visit Absolute's website, make out your wish list, and send it along with my email address (coach@iwfc.net) to anyone who asks what you want this year! (As usual, payment is due when you place your order.)
Don't forget to register for December's beginner fencing and saber classes. The beginner class is $60 plus equipment (can be rented or purchased) and the saber class is $30 (saber equipment is provided).
And now for something completely different: the Virginia Renaissance Faire is holding new cast auditions March 5 and March 12 (Saturdays) in Fredericksburg. Details are on VARF's Facebook page or I can email them to you. It's fun! And VARF is run by an educational not-for-profit so any work you do with us, cast or otherwise, meets the criteria for volunteer work in most instances.

Schedule changes, club swag, tournament - 9 Nov 2010
Tournament weekend! This weekend is the Alphabet Fracas, Richmond's annual fall ratings rally. In addition to C and under events for all three weapons, there is also an E and under foil, Y12 foil, and novice foil! Novice means this is either your first USFA tournament or your first USFA tourney was less than a year ago. Not sure if you can or should enter? Just ask! Visit the link for specific event days and times as well as for the preregistration page. And don't worry about being on your own, I'll be there both days for coaching and armory help. (Sorry for the short notice, this one crept up on me.)
Schedule change for Level A fencing! Starting next week, there will be no Level A fencing on Thursdays. But the Tuesday Level A sessions, starting on November 16, will be two hours long instead (from 6:00 to 8:00) so you'll still have two hours of basic practice available per week, it'll just all be on one day. This will just be through December; after the first of the year we'll go back to the original schedule.
Club socks and t-shirts! I'll be ordering more club t-shirts and socks on the 15th so get your order in now! These knee-high black socks have either IWFC or PFC down the sides in gray. They're super-cushiony, very comfy, and do not fall down ever. The PFC tees are white with the club crest on the left front chest and the IWFC tees are black with the club logo in white and silver on the back. Socks and tees are $15 each. Tees are in the usual sizes and socks are youth, intermediate, and adult. (I wear 9-10 women's shoes and the intermediate socks fit me nicely, just for sizing perspective.)
December's beginner class at IWFC starts on Monday, November 29. The class is $60 and equipment can be either rented or purchased. Just email to register!
Saber class at IWFC starts Friday, December 3. All equipment is provided and the fee is just $30. Classes are Friday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00. Email to register!

Orders, results, classes - 3 Nov 2010
Liz and Scott plus 'also IWFC' fencers Sten, Meredith, and Bill had good outings last weekend in the Halloween Open! Final results haven't been posted yet but the short version is that John Crumpler won foil, Douglas Daniels won saber, and Myles Matteson won the epee. I have a few videos of epee matches that will be hitting our YouTube channel soon!
The November equipment order goes in tonight, November 3. As always, orders and payment are due by 10:00 p.m. They can be turned in at club or sent in via email. Visit Absolute Fencing and start putting your order together!
November classes started this week! Missed signing up? There's still time to join, just let me know ASAP and you're good to go!
Thanks to everyone who came out for Friday night's Halloween party, despite the terrible traffic. I left my camera at home so if anyone has pictures they'd like to share, send them on over!
