Upcoming stuff and goodies - 25 May 11

May 26 (aka 'this Thursday' and 'tomorrow' among other things): After we finish fencing at IWFC, we're heading over to the AJ Gators in Eagle Harbor to kick back and relax for a bit. Come join us! That's next Thursday, June 2! Come join us then!

May 27 - 30: No fencing at PFC or IWFC. Have a great Memorial Day weekend! It's also Military History Weekend at the Virginia Renaissance Faire if you're still looking for something to do Saturday and/or Sunday. I have one free gate pass available each day so let me know if you want it! (Must be arranged in advance so let me know no later than Friday.)

June 1: June's beginning fencing class starts. The class is 10 sessions long and meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 at IWFC. The fee is $60 and equipment can be either rented or purchased. Call 238-3111 or email to register or if you have any questions.

June 1: June equipment orders and payments are due by 10 p.m. The vendor is Absolute and orders can be turned in via email or in person.

June 3: June's intermediate class begins and this month it's foil. Sessions are Tuesday and Friday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30. The fee is $60. Questions? Want to sign up? Call 238-3111 or email.

June 5: No PFC fencing.

June 9 - 13 or 14: No fencing (class or club) for IWFC or PFC. The 14th is up in the air but I'll let you know as soon as the details are settled.

General notes: Poquoson Parks and Rec is now taking registrations for the next set of fencing classes, which begin July 10, and for the fencing camps (one in July, one in August). Contact PPR to sign up.

Got a wanna-fencer who's not quite old enough for the regular beginner classes yet? Or an older youth wanna-fencer whose schedule just doesn't mesh with IWFC or PFC? The Newport News Family YMCA has a youth fencing class for ages 8-18! And it's taught by yours truly. Not a YMCA member? Not a problem, you can still sign your youngster up for the class! Just contact the NNY and they'll get you taken care of!

Wednesday night cancelled - 25 May 11

Wednesday night is cancelled. That's right, we're going straight from Wednesday evening into Tuesday morning!

Or not.

But seriously folks, tonight's regular practice is cancelled due to a schedule conflict. Apologies for the late notice but I just realized it myself about fifteen minutes ago. (This is what happens when my 'work brain' and 'not work brain' don't talk to each other!)

Stay tuned for another update later today with lots of important June stuff...

Quick weekend notes - 13 May 11

Hey Poquoson beginner class! If you missed the last class or two, you weren't alone. I know life was more than a little crazy the last few weeks so I'm going to hold an extra class this Sunday from 5:00 to 6:00 (optional, of course). Come put the finishing touches on that starting game of yours then start practicing with the club!

Also on tap for the weekend -- for the next four weekends, actually -- is the Virginia Renaissance Faire. This weekend is Shakespeare and Fantasy weekend so in addition to the usual excellent fun, you just might meet the Bard of Avon himself! VARF is run by an educational not-for-profit so you'll get to see a goodly cross-section of Elizabethan life in addition to magic, music, archery, dancing, militia drills, and food. Upcoming weekends are Pirate Invasion on May 21-22, Deaf Awareness Day on May 22, Military History Weekend on May 28-29 (active and reserve service members get in free!), and Celtic Weekend on June 4-5. Admission is $9, ages 5 and under are free. If you have any questions about the faire, visit varf.org or ask me! I saw a couple of you there last weekend and hope to see more as we go along!

Don't forget, equipment orders (and payment) are due tonight by 10 p.m. You can turn in orders either via email or at tonight's club session.

Classes, equipment orders, and tournaments - 1 May 11

The May beginner fencing class at IWFC starts Monday, May 2. There's still time to sign up -- just send an email or leave a message at 238-3111. Sessions are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 and the class is ten sessions long. The cost is $60 plus equipment which can be either rented ($30 per month plus glove) or purchased (starting at $110).

Have you been wanting to try your hand at epee? May's intermediate class at IWFC is what you're looking for! Classes are Tuesday and Friday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 and the cost is $60. All epee-specific equipment is provided. Email or leave a message at 238-3111 to register.

The May equipment order goes in this Wednesday, May 4. Orders are due to me by 10 p.m. that night and can be turned in either at practice or via email. As usual, the preferred vendor is Absolute. If you have questions about anything, just ask!

We've had a busy couple of weekends at tournaments with more to come! Scott and Bill fenced in last weekend's tournament at W&M with Scott placing fifth in foil and second in epee. This was Bill's first time out and he fenced better in each bout as the day went along so I expect we'll see him at future tournaments! Rhiannon fenced in this weekend's "E"stravaganza in Manassas against a large field of foilists, turning in a solid performance in both pools and DEs. W&M results are here and Manassas results are here.

Want to create some results of your own? Next weekend is the Battle of Spotsylvania Veteran's Tournament (including its day-long tasting buffet!) in Spotsylvania on May 7 and the RFF Ladies Spring Open in Manassas on May 8. Fencers must be 40 as of December 31, 2010, to be veterans and must be, well, female to fence in the women's event. Although I won't be available for either event (either to coach or to compete), let me know if you're planning on entering and I'll do everything I can to help you prepare beforehand.
